Two of New Zealand’s best Multisport athletes recently standing on the podium at the Speights coast to coast world championship race are leading the charge to The North Queensland for one of the toughest 1 day multisport events on Australian Shores this March 28th The Magnetic Island Adventurethon.

Female Champion of the Speights coast to coast Jess Simson who has taken out the women’s Coast 2 Coast event for the last 2 years has confirmed she will be a starter at the Magnetic Island Adventurethon one of the most brutal courses on the Queensland coast.

Simson’s strength in the coast to coast came in her paddle leg where she was able to take away a 4 minute lead from 2nd place Mair to take the win by 19 minutes in the end. The Magnetic Island Adventurethon is well regarded for its large paddle leg with a total of 26 km of paddling, 29 km of mountain biking and 22km of trail running the event represents a very real challenge in the paddle department with the leg much longer than the bulk of the other multisport events around Australia.

Her main competition includes: Andrea Peebles from the Gold Coast (AUS) who also competed in the Speights coast to coast finishing 8th on the day after what she describes as “not her best day” She is currently racing the GODZONE adventure race in NZ and a lot of her supporters are hoping the hot / humid conditions may even up the odds for Peebles.

Leela Hancox is also a good shot for a podium as former representative triathlete, Leela has spent a lot of time on the trails in her new home of the Gold Coast but is also familiar with the trails on the Jewel of North Queensland having won the Dirty Duathlon at the Magnetic Island event in 2012.

As well as some of the best Girls in the sport currently, we are lucky to see the inclusion of Samuel Clark who spent the Day at the Speights coast to coast snapping at the heels of 2 x Coast 2 Coast Champion Braden Currie. Finishing in 2nd place only 5 minutes behind Currie who was a definite favourite leading into the event. Clark was very fast over all sections of the course and is a real contender for a win on Magnetic Island

Some fierce competition will be coming from former Uncle Tobys Iron Man now Adventurer Guy Andrews who has been in great biking and paddling form lately and also beating the Off-Road Champ Ben Allen in Day 1 of the Tre-x back to back event so we know he can move fast.

Many believe that it will be hard to beat North Queensland based adventure racer Sam Stedman who has an intimate knowledge of the course and is strong in the humid weather, that said Jarad Kohlar has beaten Stedman every time they have faced off in an Adventurethon despite numerous attempts from Stedman, so we know he can be beaten on his home turf. Samuel Clark is excited to be coming to Magnetic Island and is looking forward to the rough and brutal hike a bike sections of the Mountain bike.

Team Adventurethon are looking forward to watching these favourites battle it out and expect a couple of the lesser known athletes to give the PRO competitors a good push. Of course there’s nothing better after a tough race than a bit of an after party and Magnetic Island will host great vibe for the visiting Kiwis touting the magnetic Island event as “The best atmosphere” for the after party and couple of cold beers on a Tropical Island.
