The Mojo-Rogue6

MOJO_A_LOGOPart adventure race, part rogaine, the Mojo-Rogue6 is a race where teams compete to collect as many check points as possible via trekking, mountain biking and kayaking all while navigating with map and compass. Run in partnership between Mojo Adventure and Rogue Adventure, we will be offering up two course options of either 2 hours or 6 hours length.  The event will return to the scene of the 2014 Rouge24 – Lake Perseverance – but never fear, we will cover predominantly new ground never used in a race before.

Set for Saturday 22 August 2015, this will be one of the best value adventure races you’ll ever get your hands on, and a perfect introduction to beginners in the sport. Mojo Adventure are intimately familiar with the location and will bring you a course highlighting the best bits of the area.  Full event details including timings, gear and logistics can be found below.

    Teams

A team list will be made available here in the lead up to the race.

    Equipment

The following list of compulsory equipment must be carried by the team at all times:

  • Whistle – one per person.
  • First aid kit – one per team.  Adequate for dealing with common injuries in the bush (cuts, sprains, breaks, bites, stings, blisters, burns, etc).
  • Mobile phone – one per team.  Number to be provided to officials along with indemnity forms.  Water proofed.  For use in an emergency.
  • Water – Means of carrying a minimum of 2L per person.
  • Mountain bike (capable of riding on rugged dirt trails)and Australian Standard approved helmet (Only required on Mountain Bike legs).
  • The above list is the bare minimum requirement for compulsory gear.  Everyone participating is an adult and is responsible for their own safety, and the safety of those around them.  Hence, it is strongly recommended that you carry additional gear, in particular:

  • Compass.
  • Gaiters.
  • Dry bag.
  • Additional first aid items.
  • Toilet paper and trowel.
  • Water purification tablets.
  • Bike pump, tubes, tyre levers, spare parts and mapboard.
  • Sunscreen and mosquito repellent
  • A number of items are forbidden, both during map preparation and race time, and teams found using these items to assist themselves will be disqualified:

  • Any form of GPS that displays location or distance travelled.
  • Altimeters.
  • Any other maps than those provided.
  • BICYCLE COMPUTERS
  • Cost and Entries

    Entry fees are as follows:

    • 6 Hour – $55 per person.
    • 2 Hour – $35 per person.
Entries will open via the QRA website shortly.  There is no cap on the field size as there is a BYO boat option (more details below).  Entry includes event specific maps, electronic timing, kayak hire for teams requiring a boat and post-race meal.  Teams wishing to secure one of the limited provided boats should look to enter as soon as possible.

    Format

IMG_0388Teams will be required to attempt multiple legs of alternating race disciplines.  Each leg must be attempted in order, and once a leg is completed teams may not return to it to collect missed checkpoints later unless otherwise specified in the course notes.  However, within each leg, teams may collect as many checkpoints in any order that they wish.  All check points are optional.  Note that teams may only collect checkpoints that are from the current leg that they are on.  Note also that some stages of the race may have “opening” or “closing” times.

This format of event allows for a very social atmosphere of racing with teams constantly brought together.  Each stage of the Mojo-Rogue6 is separated by a transition area where an event official will be present.  Any team that makes it back to Race HQ under their own power will be considered ranked with an official result.

    Bike Drop

Competitors in the 6 Hour event option may need to perform a bike drop prior to the start of the race.  If this is the case, ample time will be given for the drive to HQ prior to map hand out.  Further details will be released in the week before the race.  Note that if you use clip-in bike shoes, you may need to carry your running shoes with you on bike legs.

    Maps

IMG_0555Event specific maps have been produced with OCAD software using digital data and adjusted according to course vetting and satellite imagery where available.  The size and scale of each map will be released in the lead up to the event.  Duplicate copies of each map will be provided to every team so that both members can co-navigate if they wish.  Hence, teams may wish to consider putting a map board on both bikes.  Teams are also strongly advised to bring a map case or other means of waterproofing and protecting their maps, such as contact.

    Kayaks

Two-man, sit-on-top plastic skis along with paddles and PFDs will be provided to teams that require a boat for use on the kayaking stages.  These are the Spirit Double CTR skis provided by Peak Adventure and used at races such as XPD.  Note that there is a limited number of these boats available and they will be assigned on first request basis so it is worth getting an entry in early if you require one of these boats (teams with an odd number of competitors will need to bring their own additional single boat).

Competitors are also welcome to bring their own kayaks and skis to the race.  Lake Perseverance is suitable for boats with underslung rudders such as Mirages and ocean skis, and there will be no significant portages in the race.

    Scoring

Scoring will be performed using the electronic Navlight Timing System.  Please advise officials at registration if you are unfamiliar with the use of this system.  The Mojo-Rogue6 will adopt a traditional rogaine scoring format where each checkpoint will be assigned a certain score value.  Teams arriving after the finish time will receive a penalty of 10 points per minute they are late or part thereof, up to 30 minutes.  At this point the course will be closed down and teams that have not finished will lose all points.

    Prizes and Sponsors

An announcement about race sponsorship and prizes will be made shortly.  Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the first place getters in the mixed, female and male team categories.  A number of random draw spot prizes will also be awarded at the presentation ceremony.

    Volunteers.

IMG_2778Volunteers play an integral role in an event of this size going forward.  There are multiple small jobs for which we require assistance.  These include control hanging and collection before and after the race, as well as assistance on the day with such jobs as event registration, manning transition areas, gear transport, first aid safety officers, online reporting and photography.  If you or a friend or family member are able to offer assistance, please contact me at rogueadventureracing@gmail.com.

    Training Day

An anouncement about an additional training day option on Sunday 23 August 2015 hosted by leading multisport athlete Jarad Kohler will be made shortly.  The training day will have a focus on paddling technique, team work, navigation and race strategy, with places strictly limited.
