Massive line up for the biggest adventure race in the world

A massive line up is set to compete at the Act-Belong-Commit Augusta Adventure Fest on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 November.

Attracting more than 3,400 competitors the Act-Belong-Commit Augusta Adventure Fest is recognised as the world’s biggest adventure race. It includes ocean swimming, kayaking, trail running and mountain biking.

The premier event is the Act-Belong-Commit Augusta Adventure Race on Sunday - a 62km multidiscipline off-road race with over 1,900 competitors tackling a 12.5km coastal run, 1.9km ocean swim, 13km ocean paddle, 32km mountain bike and 2.5km beach run to the finish.

Seven Kiwis will be racing; including Sam Manson, Olly Shaw and Emma McCosh, who will represent Team New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman Trophy, a head-to-head battle between the best adventure racers from New Zealand and Australia.

Also coming across from New Zealand to compete is the 2012 and 2013 Augusta Adventure Race winner and reigning Multisport World Champion Braden Currie, along with reigning Australasian Multisport Champion Dougal Allan, the 2013 Augusta Adventure Race female winner Jess Simpson and also Matthew Pemberton from Nelson, NZ.

These Kiwis will have a tough battle on their hands with some fierce competition from Australia’s top adventure racers including Team Australia members Ben Allen, Jarad Kohlar and Peri Gray, as well as other top contenders Cameron Shakespeare and Elizabeth Dornom.

Ben Allen says it’s a privilege to represent Australia.

“It’s always a huge honour to don the green and gold; it has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to have the opportunity to represent my country.

“I am stoked to line up against some of the most fierce adventure racers on this planet and test my skills and abilities.

“I look forward to seeing everyone at the event. Make sure you come up and say hi and cheer us Aussies on,” said Allen.

The Act-Belong-Commit Augusta Adventure Fest features three races to cater for experienced athletes, such as those above, and for those keen to test their endurance levels in a fun, supportive and challenging environment. As well as the full Adventure Race, there is also the half-distance Augusta Mini Adventure Race and the Augusta Junior Survivor for kids under 13.

There will be plenty first-time competitors giving it a go, such as Judith Supan from Applecross who has recently moved to Australia from Germany and Max Wright who will be competing after a road trip across from Highton in Victoria.

There are also numerous new teams competing including: ‘The Crips’ from Spencer Park who are “three mates trying to make the finish line alive”; ‘Adventurous Women’ from Hocking, “a group of women who like to get out, keep fit, travel and have fun!”; and a team of three teenage school friends from Gelorup who have put their hands up for the challenge.

The local spectators will have plenty to cheer about with the region being well represented, including: ‘Team KPSI’ which consists of four teachers from Margaret River Senior High School: Stuart Kupfer-Hollis, Ian Thwaites, Kara Beecham and Priscilla Den Boer; and a group of over 50 year olds waving the banner for the Augusta Yacht Club under the team name ‘Augusta Grotty Yachties’.

There will be loads of action for spectators with the Augusta Mini Adventure Race and Augusta Junior Survivor on Saturday and the main Augusta Adventure Race on Sunday. There will also be an Adventure Expo all weekend with race commentary, food vendors and kids’ entertainment.
