2018 Trail Run FAQ

It’s a new season on the XTERRA trails, which also means new races, another chance to be an XTERRA Regional Champ, and maybe a new age group. Below are some guidelines about the XTERRA points system, age group parameters, and the official XTERRA Trail Run season.

If you have any questions, please contact Emily at trailrun@xterraplanet.com. She loves to hear from XTERRA runners, so feel free to share your experiences and tales from the trails.

Q. How does the point system work?
A. The top 15 finishers in every age group will be awarded points. In most races, you can receive points by competing in the longest distance of the day. Therefore, if there was a 21K, but you ran in the 5K, you will not receive points. The only exception to this is if there were multiple races longer than 21K. Anything 21K and over will receive points.

Additionally, points stay within their specific region. For example, if you run a race in the Arizona Trail Series, you will receive points towards your standing in that region. If you also run a race in Colorado, you cannot add those points to your standing in the Arizona Trail Series. Instead, you will receive points towards your standing in the Colorado Trail Series.

If you think you are missing points, please email Emily at trailrun@xterraplanet.com and she will be happy to take a look at the standings.

Q. Where do I find my points?
A. You can view your points at www.xterraplanet.com/trailrun/points. If you raced in two different trail run series, your name and series points will be listed in each series.

Q. How many points do I get if I win?
A. Points are given to the top 15 finishers in each age group, male and female in the following distribution:

  • 1st – 100
  • 2nd – 90
  • 3rd – 82
  • 4th – 75
  • 5th – 69
  • 6th – 63
  • 7th – 58
  • 8th – 53
  • 9th – 49
  • 10th – 45
  • 11th – 41
  • 12th – 37
  • 13th – 34
  • 14th – 31
  • 15th – 28
Q. What is the official XTERRA season?
A. The 2018 season runs from September 1, 2017 – August 31, 2018.

Q. What age group am I in?
A. Your age during the season will be based on your age on August 31, 2018. Any races on or after September 1, 2017 will be scored for 2018 points and will be based on age as of August 31, 2018.  This is the best way to make sure the runner’s points stay with them throughout the season.

Q. How can I be an XTERRA Regional Champ?
A. XTERRA Regional Champs are another name for XTERRA Trail Run Series Champs. The best way to become a champ is to race as many trail runs in the series as you can in order to accumulate the most points. If there are three races in a series, all three races will count towards your final score. If your series consists of four or more races, the race in which you scored the least amount of points will be dropped from your final score.

All Regional Champs receive a free entry into the XTERRA National Championship in Ogden, Utah in September. You can learn more at www.xterraplanet.com/trailrun.

Q. How do I qualify for the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship race?
A. The XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Ogden, Utah is open to runners of all ages and skill levels, even those who do not compete in a regional series during the year. There is no qualifying process. However, only the regional champions are eligible to receive a free entry to nationals.

Q. How do I qualify for the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship race?
A. The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii, is open to runners of all ages and skill levels, even those who do not compete in a regional series during the year. There is no qualifying process.
