Overheard on the Trail – Weekend Race Wrap-Up

Ask any distance runner – there is no better time to run than autumn. Crisp days, beautiful foliage, and plenty of trail races!

Last weekend, XTERRA stopped in Georgia, Colorado, and California with XTERRA Harbins Park Trail Run, XTERRA Gold Rush, and XTERRA Golden Gate Canyon Trail Run.

XTERRA Harbins Park Trail Run
The star of the day at Harbins Park State Park, in Dacula, Georgia was ten year old Sam Comsudes of Marietta, Georgia, who was the overall champ in the 5.3 mile trail run with a time of 36:27, or 6:53 pace. The runner up was 60 year old Phil Richey, of Grayson, Georgia, who was less than a minute behind Comsudes with a time of 37:14. In third was 47 year old Randy Terry of Savannah, with a time of 37:31.

“This is the first race Sam has run with us,” said race director, Tim Schroer. “I had the opportunity to speak with him and his family before and after the race, and we hope they join us again this season.”

Autumn Dipietro of Duluth, Georgia was the women’s champ with a time of 38:52, a speedy 7:20 pace. Runner up Christine Grant from Gainesville, Georgia came through four seconds later in 38:56. Gabi Comsudes – Sam’s 13-year old sister – was third in 41:31.

XTERRA Gold Rush
This was the inaugural race for XTERRA Gold Rush in Granite Bay, California, along the shore of Folsom Lake. Roe Ontiveros won the 10-mile trail run in 1:10:36, just eight seconds ahead of runner up Jonathan Goergen. Steven Chavez was third in 1:11:25.

On the women’s side, Tracy Hoeg set a new course record in 1:17:47. Kathy Cervantez was the runner up in 1:27:37 and Alycia Otte was third in 1:34:14.

“Beautiful trail conditions at the race and it was so well marked,” said Hoeg. “I have gotten lost on those trails a number or times, but not on Saturday. I think I will describe the race as “playful” since I felt like we kept jumping, hopping, turning, and running through different terrain. Honestly, I was just running it as a training run, but then I was having so much fun that I thought – why not speed up a bit? My big goal is training for the World Championships in ultra trail running in Spain this May.” Hoeg will be running for Denmark.
