Elites race Saturday, amateurs Sunday at European Championship

This year’s XTERRA European Championship elite race will be held on a modified course and on its own day, Saturday, September 2 in Mons Klint, Denmark.  The amateur race will be held the following day, Sunday, September 3.

“It’ll be intense, and very spectator-friendly,” said race director Andreas Juul Jeppesen about the new course for elites. “They’ll do four 7.5km mountain bike loops and we’ll have Red Bull-themed obstacles for them to navigate each time they start a new lap.  The 10km run course features three laps that also pass through the arena, and we’ll have big screens showing live results.”

As the last of 15 events on the 2017 XTERRA European Tour the elite field is sure to be strong and deep. The race will award $25,000 USD in prize money to the top 10 men/women and distribute an additional $20,000 USD in bonuses to the top 10 in the final Euro Tour standings after the race.

“I’m really excited to see this,” said XTERRA European Tour director Nicolas Lebrun.  “Having multiple laps will make the elite race much more exciting to watch for spectators and easier to follow for the media.  You can expect the pictures, video, and live social media coverage of the race will all be better as a result.  Plus, our amateur athletes will be able to watch, learn, and cheer on some of the best XTERRA elites in the world.”

Then on Sunday, September 3, the amateurs race and the elites will be the cheerleaders.

“We are encouraging all of the elites to return on Sunday and join the staff and spectators at the amateur race, both on the course and at the awards ceremony. We think it’ll be a great experience for all involved and take the XTERRA family atmosphere to a whole new level,” said Jeppesen.

The amateur course will feature the same 1.5km swim and famous 500-steps staircase to transition, however, to accommodate the large number of participants the bike course will be held on the traditional one-lap, 30km loop, and the run course will feature two 5km laps.
